April 15th

The timeline and warmup schedule has already been released for this weekends meet :http://gulfswimming.org/meet_information/lc08/cfsc/m1_apr18/warmup_timing.pdf. I want to let every one know that this is a split session meet which means 11& up age group swims in the morning and the 10& under age group swims in the afternoon.  Our Friday warmups are at 5:05 in lane 9, On Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon our warmup lane is lane 10. As always I will have my phone on all week and weekend if anything should arise call me.

It is that time of the year to start looking for a new Terrapins T-shirt design. Kids and parents if you have any ideas of pictures or slogans that you would like to use for a T-shirt design please turn them into me via email or handing them to me at practice. I will announce a practice day that we will use to vote on the best design and we will submit it to D&J sports for our shirts next short course season. There are almost no limitations on what the design can be, as long as it is something everyone would be proud to wear.

Looking ahead for the next swim meet it is going to be one of the few short course meets during the summer. May 9-11th is the PACK swim team meet BB& under: http://gulfswimming.org/meet_information/lc08/pack/m1_may9/invitation.pdf. I am currently working on the wishful entries right now and will have them out shortly, the final list will have to be sent out April 29th.

We are still looking to fill a position on the Terrapins board of directors. If you think you could possibly fill this position or would like more information about the position please feel free to email me. If I can't answer your questions I will forward them to a person that could.

I leave this weekly update with a tip about cross training from USAswimming.org:

Swensen’s Tip:

Any cross-training activity that works the same energy systems as swimming is going to have a positive effect on your overall condition when you are in the water. There is a specific training effect in the muscles that you use for an activity if you do it enough, but there are also improvements in your heart and lung function that will help your swimming. Certainly, if you spend several months training for only running, your swimming performance will likely suffer. However, if you add some running to your usual workout program and stretch adequately after all of your workouts, running won’t be bad for you. Just don’t twist your ankle.

April 9th

This week I want to start off reminding you that practice times have changed!!! Juniors, blue and teal will all start at 5:45, blue will end at 6:30 and teal will end at 6:45. Juniors will want to start bringing their shoes and such as we will start running a little bit before practice now. Aqua and green will both start at 6:15 and end at 7:15. Friday will be a normal practice for us and nothing will change, unless the FAST clinic has a rain out day and has to use Friday as a makeup day.

We have more info on the short course awards party April 26th. Attached is the map again in case anyone missed it the first time, also attached is the list of food dishes. The party will start at 6:30 PM we will pass out awards and signs, eat some food, and have a good time. Anyone that has attended even one swim meet this short course season is urged to attend to the awards night! We will have swimmers over all season reports for every swimmer that participated this year to show their overall progression.

I have had a lot of interest in the TTST yard signs and have been told that the form that I made was not working for everyone. I will have forms to purchase the TTST yard signs (can be seen at practice) with me at practice every day. We will try to get those ordered signs out by Friday, any signs we do not get out Friday we will have them to pass out at the awards party.

Tuesday I will be taking down the circle sheets for the first long course meet from the pool. Entries will be finalized and sent out on Wednesday morning, so if you want to get into this meet make sure you fill out the form, $4 per event, and bring it to me at practice or circle your swimmers name on the bulletin board. If you haven't done a long course meet before I highly suggest it as it is another type of swimming that most swimmers do not get to try, it is also one of the last meets swimmers can do before summer swim team starts up.

March 24th

I hope everyone enjoyed their Spring Break, practices are getting back to normal this week. Attached to this email is my wishful entries again as a reminder for the April 5th Sprint meet and the meet forms, I will be bringing a copy of this to the pool with me and taking it down on Tuesday as final entries will be sent off on Wednesday.  Info on this meet can be found at http://gulfswimming.org/meet_information/sc0708/eagle/invitation.pdf

Also attached is a map and direction to our short course awards party!!! This party will be April 26th (mark your calendars) at 6:30 PM at the Fairfield Baptist Church. We will be handing out awards and season packets for all swimmers that participated in the swim meets this short course season. Also, to any parents that took pictures during the swim season at all if you could please send them to me via email or on a CD at practice I would like to see how many pictures I can get.

Swim lessons are coming starting April 2nd. To start off I will only be offering lessons on Wednesday before practice (3:00PM will be the last lesson) and Friday after practice (6:30 will be the first lesson). More days may be added if enough interest is there so if you have any siblings, friends, or neighbors that need swim lessons please have them get in contact with me at HCTTST@hotmail.com and we will get them set up. All the information and forms that will need to be filled out can be found at http://texasterrapins.com/uploads/2007_LTS_Schedule_information.pdf.

Swimmers get ready to build back up, our weeks of technique are now over and we will be using the majority of our practices now to build strength and endurance again. Technique Thursdays will continue as normal but be ready for some off the wall (no pun intended) sets that we only do during the long course season.

Thanks,

March 10th

It was cold enough in Dallas this weekend, at TAGS, to get a chance to play in the snow!!! We had fun and Shaley did amazing for her first ever TAGS, it was a great way for her to end a wonderful season. This Friday we will be having a fun Friday since we have not had one in a very long time, so bring your shoes and water because we are going to play ultimate Frisbee. I will also be shaving my head completely bald for our fun Friday!!!

Some of you may have noticed that the FAC is actively trying to make the pool and the pool area a much nicer and cleaner place to swim at, we need your help!! I have been told that there was some vandalism left on the freshly concreted baby pool up by the gazebo that we cannot let happen. Parents please make sure that your young ones are under your watch while their older siblings are swimming. Also, the bulletin board at the entrance to the pool is in dire need of repairs and up keeping so we do not have to throw it out. We use that bulletin board to post information for the team and would love to keep it there. If anyone wants to take the bulletin board over please let me know at HCTTST@hotmail.com.

Attached to this email is the calendar for March, I want to point out that we will be swimming during spring break, not good Friday though, in the mornings. This will be the first year we have ever done this and I want to do it this year as I feel we have been behind in our training and learning ever since the heater issues from the begging of the short course season.  I want to take that extra week to make sure every swimmer has improved on his/her stroke technique before we start pushing hard again. The week following spring break we will start to increase the practice difficulty until we have reached or surpassed where we ended the short course season.

There is an 8& under sprint meet coming up April 5th that we are thinking about attending. It is a bit of a drive but if you would like to attend please shoot me an email as I would like to see how many are interested. Here is the invitation:

http://gulfswimming.org/meet_information/sc0708/eagle/invitation.pdf

The long course meet schedule has been posted!!! Our first long course meet is April 18th at FLEET, everyone will be eligible to attend this meet and I will urge you to because swimming in a 50 meter pool is a different experience for swimmers.

http://gulfswimming.org/meet_information/08lc.htm

I am currently watching the weather like a hawk to make sure we are going to be able to practice today. It is not looking very good right now but I will not make any judgment calls  until about 2:30 so look for an email about practice in an hour or so.

Thanks,

This weekend was the closing of our short course season! We had a blast and the kids did very well. Shaley Schneider made another TAGS time in the 50 free this weekend! As our short course season comes to an end so do the hard work outs, kids rejoice! This week we will be winding down and starting to pick up more on technique again rather than set after set. Starting next Monday all week will be technique week and we will continue on with this for the next 2 and a half weeks. It is time to get prepared for the next season and summer league.

We will be having our makeup meeting, from the one that got rained out, this Wednesday. We will have one meeting at 5:15 and another one at 7:00, please try to make them and bring any questions you might have about swim team or this summer with you.

I leave this weekly update with a wonderful tip from USA swimming about staying hydrated as a swimmer:

                Staying Hydrated

http://usaswimming.org/usasweb/_Rainbow/images/Swimmers/week.jpgThis week’s Speedo Tip of the Week comes from Charlene Boudreau, former director of USA Swimming’s Performance research and Nutrition Programs. Boudreau offers some advice on staying hydrated while training and competing.

No matter your age or the length of your workout, all swimmers need fluids during practice to stay hydrated. A couple of sips of water every 15 to 20 minutes should do the trick, but a workout longer than 90 minutes requires an additional fuel source like a sports drink, which provides electrolytes.

Drinks that are too concentrated can inhibit fluid absorption and lead to stomach cramping, Boudreau says. Drinks that are 6 to 8 percent carbohydrate by weight, such as Gatorade and Powerade, are recommended. Boudreau warns swimmers to stay away from energy drinks, such as Red Bull, Sobe and others.

After a workout, drink at least one cup of water. Competitive swimmers also need slightly more than 1 gram of carbohydrate for every kilogram of body weight each hour after a workout, beginning immediately within the first hour after a workout.

Below are some simple points to remember in staying hydrated:

  • During practice, keep a full water bottle by the side of the pool and sip between repeats and sets.
  • For workouts 90 minutes or longer, choose sports drinks like Gatorade that stimulate fluid absorption, maintain proper fluid balance and provide energy to working muscles. Avoid carbonated drinks, which can cause stomach bloating and may reduce fluid intake.
  • Outside of the workout, stay hydrated with water, 100 percent fruit juices and soups. Limit sports drinks to practice only, and limit sodas and coffee to special occasions.
  • Check the color of your urine occasionally. Dark-colored urine may be an indication that you are dehydrated and need fluids.
  • Don’t “overdrink” water at meets. It is important to pair water with electrolytes like sodium and potassium to keep the body’s fluid balance in check. If the meet is in a hot environment, stay hydrated with a combination of water, sports drink and juice.

B and under champs meet is over and after thinking about how the meet went I can only hope that the bb & up meet goes just as well. This meet was absolutely amazing, lots of best times set, amazing swims, and a lot of fun.

I want to remind everyone that today will be the other day for our parents and coach Q&A. We will have one meeting at 5:15 PM and another one at 7:00 PM at the pool. If you have any questions regarding summer league or the Long Course season with the Terrapins please come and I will answer your questions. I want to make sure everyone is well prepared for this summer.

Attached to this email is the wishful entries for the BB&up champs meet Feb. 22nd as a reminder that I will be taking the list down from the pool today and sending off my final entries tomorrow morning. If you would like to swim please make sure you let me know either by circling your swimmer at the pool or emailing me at HCTTST@hotmail.com .

The FAC is undergoing some changes and policies for the pool area and will need our help to keep the pool area neat. So after practices are done parents please make sure you put chairs back where you got them and swimmers will be asked to pick up their trash and gear to put away in the proper spots. I will be organizing the lost and found that we have collected thus far and will begin putting it out at the start of practice.

Also, here is a letter from the new Chairman of the TTST board of directors, Brian Gambrell:

                Hi TTST Parents,

My name is Brian Gambrell and I am the new TTST Chairman of the board.  I currently have one son swimming but hopefully my other son will start after summer league.  I swam for Fleet for 3 years and all four year of high school.

I am very interested in your thoughts, comments and complaints.  I want to help TTST be the best it can be.  My contact information is attached and I will be happy to talk to you about anything TTST related.

We have two open positions on the board.  We need a treasurer and we have a newly created position that will be in charge of helping TTST become an incorporated nonprofit organization.

February 4th

We had a great meet this weekend! Toni Gonzales did very well at her first swim meet, Derek Miller set some best times this weekend, including 2 A times (200 IM and 100 free) and dropped 17 seconds in his 500 Free (11 from high school times). Natalie Hill Improved on all of her swims from last year for her first swim meet back, Kamryn and Shaley Schneider both have been out of the water for quite some time due to being sick and both of them had a very great meet. Kendall Hickman had a great meet and set some best times as well as swam some great first events. Over all I was very happy with how our Terrapins did this weekend not only time wise but technique wise as well.

This week I want to start off with a reminder about Wednesday’s Q&A. At 5:15 and 7:00 this Wednesday I will be leaving the deck to coach Meagan and Ethan while I meet with parents and answer any questions they have. With short course ending and long course (and summer league) coming up very quickly I am sure there are a lot of questions that will need to be answered, so please come at one of those times and I will answer as many of them as I can, this will also happen again next Monday

Attached are the BB& up wishful entries list for Katy on February 22-24th. I will have a print out at the pool bulletin board that you can use to circle your swimmers name to confirm you would like to attend. Also make sure to send all conformation emails to HCTTST@hotmail.com labeled as KATY BB&UP.  I will be sending out the entries for this meet next Tuesday which means Monday night I will take home the wishful sheet from the bulletin board. This will be the final meet of the short course season, which means our technique days will increase from 1-2 to 3-4 days a week again. Also attached is the February calendar and I would like to point out February 11th, NO MORE DRAG FOR JUNIORS!!!! Rejoice I know, we will be preparing for the final meet on the 22nd.

January 28th

I want to start this weekly update off with a reminder that the PACK entries will be taken down tonight and sent off first thing tomorrow. So if you want to get into that meet tonight is the night. Make sure you either circle your name up at the pool or you send an email to HCTTST@hotmail.com.

Attached is an article about the art of swimming and recovery. As the season comes down to a close I want to make sure our swimmers understand why the things we do at practice and meets are so important to their training. Not only is the information important for them it is also very helpful for the parents to understand this as well. There is also a thirst article you can read as well. All this information will help better your swimmers at practice and meets.

Next Wednesday (Feb. 6th) and the following Monday (Feb. 11th) I will be holding a Q&A for parents on the team. We will have all 3 coaches at practices on those days so that I can hold a Q&A during practice for parents that need questions to be answered with the upcoming change from short course to long course. I will hold these Q&A’s twice during practice, once at 5:15 and once at 7:15. Any question you have about swimming or swim team I will answer and hopefully clear up any confusion.

Thirst Mechanism

The Art of Recovery

January 21st

I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend off. I will be taking down the wishful entries for the MAC open meet today and finalizing the meet entries and sending them out tomorrow. Tonight is your last night to get in for the meet Feb. 1st. I will be posting the wishful entries for the PACK meet on Tuesday. We are working on creating a meet entry form to make entering meets a little more streamline and simple to do. We are also going to start preparing for the up and coming long course season of swim. I will be setting up a date that we will have during practice with all 3 coaches on deck so I can get away and have meetings with all the parents to answer questions and explain how things work and what the changes for short course to long course are. I will have dates and times to be sent out on these meetings for the next weekly update. In an everlasting attempt to improve communications

I have made a new email address that will be more reliable and not go down. This new email is HCTTST@hotmail.com , it is already up and running it is just taking longer than expected for me to transfer all my contacts over. Next weekly update will be from that email address and any emails you have now may be sent there. We are also working very hard on getting the team phone up and running, as soon as it is the phone number will be up on the website and in my signature for my emails.
Drag time is coming to an end very soon, Juniors rejoice! Feb. 13th is the last day of drag for the short course season, we will be getting ready for the spring champs at Katy, attached to this email is a very helpful article about a swimmers diet.  After that meet is done we will be rebuilding again with lots of technique practices. With the summer approaching quickly all the coaches will be working hard to make sure the swimmers are legal in all 4 strokes.

Coach Jason

January 15th

We had a great weekend at Katy. The kids did awesome and most importantly their technique looked amazing! I am so proud of all the swimmers that took part in the meet this weekend. We will be pushing the blue and teal group hard to get their butterfly and breaststroke to be legal.

The entries for the MAC open meet will be done by next Tuesday, which means I need to know by Monday. The wishful entries list that I put on the bulletin board can be used to confirm your child for the meet, just circle your child’s name and next Monday I will take that list down and enter all names that are circled. I am hoping for a lot of people to sign up for this meet as it is a meet that all age groups will be able to go to. With enough entries this meet should be very fun for the younger and older swimmers.

Next Monday is a student holiday and we will be swimming at normal times. February marks the end of our short course season with the close of the spring champs meets. We are going to use our time to prepare for the final meets then after that we will be breaking strokes down and rebuilding them again to prepare for long course/ summer league. It will be time to break any bad habits that arose this short course season. We are also planning to have a fun family night to celebrate the end of our season and to prepare for the start of the long course season.

Thanks,

Coach Jason

January 7th

Today is the start of our first full week of practices, which means practice times are back to normal. It is time to get back into the flow of things and get it started up again. Reminder green/aqua/junior needs to start bringing drag suits with them to practice every day. Drag suits can be bought at D&J sports or they can be basketball shorts or even old worn out swim suits that you used to wear. Juniors will use drag every day where as green/aqua not every day, but make sure you have it.

I talked with Sally and she wanted me to remind everyone that monthly tuitions are due. There will be no late fees this week due to the holidays so be sure to get your checks into the black box before the end of this week.

There is a swim meet this weekend at Katy, the timeline and warm-up schedule has not been posted as of yet but as soon as it is I will get it out to you. For now I will provide you with the link to the meet invitation and the final entries attached to the email. I will also be printing out final entries and hanging them up at the pool on the bulletin board.

http://gulfswimming.org/meet_information/sc0708/katy/m2_112/invitation.pdf

Also, for reason still yet undetermined my email address is still unable to receive. I created a new email account that cannot send but can receive, Dartok@igg.net, so for all emails coming to me for now please use the dartok@igg.net email and you will get a response from my normal email. As soon as my email provider can figure out what is going on it will be fixed. Thanks for your understanding.

Thanks,

Coach Jason

December 17th

With the Christmas party over and done with we have one more week of practice till vacation time starts. Attached is the December calendar  and the Ags 11&up open meet. I highly recommend that if you can make this meet you do as it is a very fun and different swim meet. It will be at the A&M college station pool, Olympic size, and since its short course it will be a split pool! Off of the top of my head I cannot think of a more fun meet to attend than this one. I will be bringing a printed version of the wishful entry list to staple to the board at the entry of the pool.

We are still in search of board members! If you would like any information on which positions we still have open please email me and I will answer any questions you have.

The cold weather is here to stay it looks like so make sure your children are dressed warm wearing shoes and a jacket that can cover their heads up. It is very important to keep them bundled up after they get out of the pool!

As a warning to all, last week Coach Ethan left his wallet in the life guard room and at about 5:45 when he went in there to get something out he noticed his wallet had been messed with. When he picked it up he found out that $30 had been stolen from his wallet. This is the first time something has been stolen during practice but not the first time at that pool so please make sure if your child has anything of value that he/she puts it away in their bag in view of the coaches.

My email issues continue, I am able to send out emails from this address but not able to receive. I have set up a dummy email account so that I can receive emails until I fix the problem with this one. Please send all emails regarding swimming to Dartok@igg.net and I will respond through my normal email as quickly as possible.

Thanks,

Coach Jason

December 10th

What a great winter champs meet this weekend! Danny Thorne got his first A time in the 50 free style, Derek Miller broke 1 min in the 100 free swimming it in 58 seconds!!!! Delany Crowder swam a legal butterfly and an almost legal breast stroke for her first time ever. Everyone put up some great times and had their best swims ever this weekend. I am so proud of everyone that went this weekend and I hope you all had as much fun as I did!

I want to start off by letting everyone know that this Wednesday from 5:20 till about 6:50 D&J sports will be at our pool with parkas for fittings and orders. If you would like one please make sure you are there, these parkas are absolutely amazing for keeping swimmers warm and dry.

Christmas party is this Thursday so there will be no practice. The party starts at 6 PM and is going to be at the  High star Christmas tree farm.

Junior group will want to be at practice a tad bit early today, you can thank Danny today as well. Also, Juniors will need to get prepared for drag! Starting in January the Junior group will be swimming with drag, we are doing this to help build their strength in the water as well as help push their endurance to the next level. I would also like the Green and Aqua group to have some sort of drag swim suit that they can wear here and there as I would like for them to try this out as well. They will not get as heavy intensive into as the Junior group but they will be wearing it every now and then.

I want to start off this weekly update by letting you know that I have fixed the problem with the program for my wishful entries!! Attached above are the correct entries and everyone should be in the proper age group and events now. Please let me know if anything is wrong!

This is Thanksgiving week which means combined practice on Wednesday (all practices end at 6:15 check calendar for exact times) and no practice on Thursday or Friday. Bowling for Friday is going to be either pushed back to a different date or canceled all together, we are in discussion about it and I will let you know exactly what we are going to do with our family/friend bowling night.

Today at practice will be a technique day again due to the short week! I am going to plan on more flip turns again as we still need a bit more time to perfect those and hopefully time for breaststroke. Wednesday we are going to plan on having a fun day at the end of practice, it has been a while since we had a fun practice and since it is Thanksgiving let’s have a ball!

Thanks,

Coach Jason

November 12th

What a weekend!!! We had a blast this weekend at the 10 & under Lonestar swim meet. All the kids did amazing!! Shaley Schneider got a TAGS time this weekend in her 50 backstroke!!!! We had the only 6 year old, Beth McNeese, out of the entire meet to swim the 100 butterfly!! There were a lot of new swimmers that put up a lot of B times their first swims in USA swimming ever and a lot that were very close to BB times. We had such a huge turnout that our team cheer in the morning was super loud, the kids had fun , the coaches had fun, and everyone did an amazing job! I could not have asked for a better swim meet. After seeing the progress this swim meet from last week (butterfly/breast on Thursday and flip turns/starts on Friday) we are going to continue this week with technique days. This Thursday we will be doing backstroke and flip turns, on Friday we will do butterfly technique.

November 23rd (the day after thanksgiving) is scheduled to be a no swim day so in lieu of swimming we are going to try and get a family fun night bring a friend at the bowling alley. The price is going to be 15$per person but that 15 $will include… 4 hours of bowling, shoe rental, 2 slices of pizza and a drink. They are going to reserve up to 15 lanes, that will allow for 75 people to bowl. If this is something that you would be interested in doing please let me know by email by Thursday. We would like to have a minimum of 10 people for this to get going and that can include the bring a friends!

It is coming up to that time of the year again for the Christmas party to happen, but we are a little confounded with which day to hold it on and would like to get the team’s opinion. If you could please reply back to this email with the subject line of Christmas party and let me know if Dec. 13th, 27th, or Jan. 3rd would be a better day for your family to do this party, it would really help us out a lot. We want to try and have it on a date that we know most of our families can show up so we can have a great time like we did last year.

I am working on the PACK winter champs swim meet entries but this is a longer meet to enter. I will have my wishful entries out by tonight or tomorrow morning at the latest. These entries will not be due until Nov. 27th so there will be plenty of time to get a response back to me. This meet is a split session meet which means  Friday will be all ages together, Saturday will be 10 & under in the morning and 11& up at noon or later depending on how the morning session goes, that goes for Sunday as well. Here is a link to this meets invitation:

 http://gulfswimming.org/meet_information/sc0708/pack/m3_12-7/invitation.pdf

The board is still looking for more people to volunteer. We have a couple of positions that need to be filled so if you are interested please let me know via email.
Thanks,

Coach Jason

November 5th

Going to start this weekly update off with Swim-A-Thon update. With the heater fixed we are running out of time for make ups so this week I am going to have 1 lane reserved during all practice times (3:30 -7:45) for Swim-A-Thon make ups. You must provide your own counter and will receive the 2 hours just like everyone else. It has to be done this week as Swim-A-Thon packets are due November 14th, which means they have to be in my hands at practice on that day. Please remember do not put Swim-A-thon packets in the black box they will go to me.

I would like to paste a statement that is being released by the board about the heater problems that we had in the previous weeks:

                TTST Parents,

The TTST Board has agreed to grant a credit to all the swimmers that were not allowed to swim due to the heater malfunction.  This credit will appear on a special  November statement that will be emailed to families by Tuesday Nov 6.  Please note that the credit has been applied to any outstanding balances and then November dues, thus the balance that appears at the bottom of the statement is the amount that you need to pay for November. All checks in the black box through November 3rd have been processed, contact Sally Johnson if you are showing a credit.  For all returning swimmers that still need to pay USA fees - please ADD this to your balance as this does not appear on your bill. Going forward, Coach Jason will have running and other dry land activities planned should this situation arise in the future.  We appreciate your extreme patience on this matter.  Please contact me or Jack Bruno if you have any questions or comments.   Additionally, please keep in mind that all Swim-A-Thon monies are due to Michelle Weyand by Nov 14 and that these monies are not reflected in statements.

Kind regards,

Andrew Bouffard

281-794-1822

This Thursday and Friday all groups will be taking 2 days to go over technique for fly and breast as well as getting our flip turns and starts down. We have had quite a few swimmers join the team after our technique weeks ended where all we did was technique and I feel that it is necessary to go back and start taking some time to make sure all of our swimmers have it down. This means Monday – Wednesday will be normal practices in which we are building endurance and strength for our swimmers to be able to handle the longer distance swims. This will continue until we are satisfied with the technique that we are seeing at practice.

October 29th

This weekend went great at the AQUASTAR meet. Graham Hovorka swam in is first USA swim meet and did amazing. He swam 50 backstroke in under a minute!!! The kids all did great and improved their times and looked wonderful while they were swimming. As a reminder I will be sending out the final entries for the lonestar meet tomorrow, so if you have not checked them yet please look and see if you can go and if what I have your kid(s) in will be fine.

This Wednesday is Halloween, we will be having a fun practice with some interesting game + I will bring some candy to give to the swimmers as a trick or treat. Thursday, Nov. 1st,  is when the Swim-A-Thon packets are due. If you have not already gotten them to me please be sure to bring them by this week. We are discussing the heater issue with Swim-A-Thon make ups with the board and when a decision has been made I will pass that information onto you.

As a reminder team shirts are on the way but we have the silicon caps now. We sell them for 10$apiece, basically what we pay for them, just let me know at practice if you would like to purchase one.

So last week we had a heater problem which caused all the later practice to be combined and no younger kids got to practice. The FAC and myself are working diligently to fix the problem but aren’t having the results we are hoping for. The company that owns the heater has acknowledged that the pool heater isn’t working right but have not pin pointed the exact problem yet. I just got off  the phone with coach Ethan and the pool temp is still very low. We will be having a combined practice again today unfortunately, so older kids bring shoes for extra dry land, no blue or teal and green/aqua come at 4:00.

Coach Jason

October 23rd

What a week we had last week. We had a storm come a day early so the Swim-A-Thon could go on without any problems. I was very surprised with our turn out! I knew there would be a lot of swimmers but that pool was packed! All the swimmers did a wonderful job as well, returning swimmers swam more this year than they did last year, and new swimmers swam a lot of laps for the first Swim-A-Thon.

After this week we will be swimming much more and getting rid of dry land. Now is the time in the season where we will begin to hit swimming head on with full force. Endurance and strength in the pool will go up and swimmers will become faster! Yesterday was a good example of what it will be like for the swimmers when the temperatures start to drop, so make sure your child comes to practice with cloths, jacket, shoes, and something to cover their heads with. We want to keep our swimmers nice and toasty after they are done swimming.

Parent volunteers are still needed for the board positions. Email Michelle Weyand @ Organize2play-TTST@yahoo.com if you are interested, the dead line is Nov. 5th. Also, we need more parent volunteers at swim meets. We have a lot of new parents this year and a lot of timing spots that will need to be filled at swim meets. The parents that have been here for some time now will always be able to answer any questions you have at meets, as well as myself. I have noticed at the last couple of meets we have had the same parents timing all day on both days of the meets. Lets make sure that we are spreading the timing assignments out.

T-shirts are on the way! They should be here within next week as I have been told. When they arrive I will have them at the pool and will be writing names in them and handing them out to swimmers. Also, we have a new batch of the green silicone TTST swim caps for sale for 10$. You won’t find a better cap for cheaper!

Thanks,

Coach Jason

October 15th

What a great meet this weekend!!  Shaley Schneider put up a lot of A times this weekend, and other returning swimmers put up some of their best times yet. I was very proud of all our new swimmers this weekend as well, I saw great swims and they looked like they were having a lot of fun. Keep up the good work!!!!

Tomorrow is the big day!! Swim-A-Thon is tomorrow from 3:30 to 6:30 at the FAC pool. There will be music, food, and prizes to be won after the kids are done swimming.  We will be keeping our fingers crossed for the weather tomorrow! I hope everyone can attend.

Juniors be ready for more conditioning this week. Last week I felt like it went real well with our leg workouts and we are going to continue this week with the Abs. These conditioning days are here to help our swimmers get their muscles used to the idea of being worked past the point of exhaustion so that when they are racing and their muscles start to tire, our swimmers will be prepared and be able to push through. So come prepared for hard work and bring water and Gatorade to drink!

The form for the new session of our Learn To Swim program is now out on the web site. We have 3 coaches available for swim lessons all with lots of experience and much better time slots this year than normal. We will be offering lessons from Monday to Thursday starting anywhere from 2:00 till 5:00. If you are interested please let me know and if not please spread the word.

October 8th

What a great weekend we had. The kids that went to the Katy meet did awesome! We had a lot of best times made and a few swimmers new to USA swimming. I am looking forward to the HCAP meet this weekend with the 10& under! Attached is the final entries that were sent into HCAP. If you would like to on deck this meet please let me know.

Today is Columbus day and the kids are out of school! That means today will be a combined Friday practice. That means the times are as follows:

Junior 3:30-5:30
Aqua 4 – 5:30
Green 4 – 5:30
Teal 5:15 – 6:15
Blue 5:30 – 6:15

Tuesday will be normal practice times again. Also Tuesday starts our condition training with the junior group which means they will need to be prepared to work! We will be focusing on legs this week so be sure you eat a healthy snack before practice on Tuesday and to bring water/Gatorade to drink.

Swim-A-Thon is coming very quickly and I still have a few packets left. If you have not picked up your packet yet please make sure you see me at practice.

We have the Aquastar meet coming up at the end of October . Here is the link to the information on that swim meet it is a 10& under open meet and an 11-14 BB & under meethttp://www.gulfswimming.org/meet_information/sc0708/aqua/m1_126/invitation.pdf. Also I made some changes to the October calendar that were left off (Halloween practice) and have attached the new calendar to this email.

Thanks,

Coach Jason

Sept 17th

This week there is quite a bit of information to be handed out. I would like to start off with our board members who have been doing this for the past 2 years and are now needing to step down. Andy Bouffard, Michelle Weyand, and Lisa Edwards have all done a wonderful job serving on the TTST board to help this team function. We appreciate everything they have done for the team and hope we can continue to make the team run smoothly. The positions we are looking to fill are Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Secretary. If you would like to be on the Terrapins board please email  Michelle Weyand at Organize2play-TTST@yahoo.com which position you could possibly fill.

Back to the business of swimming! October 5th is our first meet this year and it is for ages 11& up.  http://gulfswimming.org/meet_information/sc0708/katy/m1_105/Katy%20Invitation%2011Up%20Final.pdf Here is a link to the meet information. I will be sending out my wishful entries list out late this week. Also the October 13th meet information has already been posted up for the 10& under swim meet. http://gulfswimming.org/meet_information/sc0708/hcap/m1_1013/invitation.pdf Wishful entries for that meet will be sent out first thing next week. Also, for anyone looking for meet information for the rest of this year so you can plan around it, http://gulfswimming.org/meet_information/sc0708/2007-08_MeetGroups_071107.pdf .

Swim lessons are going to be starting back up again. Coach Megan, Coach Ethan, and myself will be offering them. The days will be Wednesdays and Thursdays and will have to be before practice. If you know anyone that is looking to get into swim lessons please email me to get it set up.

Returning swimmers, it is that time of the year again. USA registration forms are getting ready to be sent off, so if you haven’t paid your USA fees please do so by September 26th.  If there are any questions please do not hesitate to email me.

Sept. 3rd

Happy Labor Day!!! I hope everyone is enjoying their day off today and preparing for the start of a new season!  Tuesday begins the start of our technique weeks, it is time to tear down and rebuild for a stronger season this year. Coach Barbara has left us with a wonderful team that we can build upon to make it better. We have some new coaches that will be here this week! Megan Scott will be here starting Tuesday and Ethan Still, AKA dolphin dude, will start coaching on Wednesday. I am very excited to have these two join our team as I know they will be a great addition to the coaching staff!

This Thursday D&J sports is coming out to the pool so have your orders ready before then. If you did not fill out an order form at registration you can place a phone call and have them bring it out on Thursday or bring a form up to the pool and D&J sports will call me when you gear arrives. It’s ok if you don’t have all your gear right away as during technique weeks we will not use it very much.

Practice times starting Tuesday will be as follows:

Junior group – 3:30 – 5:30

Blue group – 5:30 – 6:15

Teal group – 5:30 – 6:30 or 6:15 – 7:15

Green group – 6:15 – 7:45

Aqua group – 4:00 – 5:30 or 6:15 – 7:45

Also parents remember that due to insurance policies with USA swimming that no parents are allowed on deck during swim practice. You can sit inside the gated area on the sidewalk leading up to the pool, or under the gazebo but not on the deck next to the pool. When picking your child up please remind them that if you are not going inside the gate to get them that they have to wait inside the gated area until they can see your vehicle in the parking lot. This way we can make sure your child is safe!

If you have any questions please feel free to email me. I am looking forward to the start of a new season see you all Tuesday.

August 27th

The Sumo Wrestling is ON for today!!!!  We still have 4 – 6 spots left, so you can sign up when you get there.  Please remember to bring your $10 (cash or check to TTST) with you.

We will still swim today, so one coach will be with the Sumo’s and the other will be on deck for the swimmers.  We have a 30% chance of rain today, and it’s the best for this entire week, so I hope we do get to swim today!

Remember, practice times are changed this week due to school.  We are practicing from 4 – 6 for all groups:

Juniors  4 – 6

Green   4:30 – 6]

Teal      5 – 6

Blue      5:15 – 6

For today, if you are doing the sumo wrestling, come at 4, or as soon as you can.  If you are just swimming, come to your regular group time.

Coach Jason has a new email address:  coachjason@igg.net        Add this to your address book and be ready for email to start coming from him next week.

For those that haven’t signed up yet, you can get the registration packet from the website under forms.  Remember to print out the USA registration form also.  You won’t pay for that now, but it’s easier if we have ALL the paperwork up front.  Returning Terrapins pay the team registration and the month of September dues.  USA registration is due in November.  NOTE:  some of you paid the seasonal USA membership – if you did, you will need to pay the full USA registration fee now.  You can turn your paperwork into us at practice this week.

We are finishing up our last week at Lakeside this week.  Next week the team will move back to FAC.  The first Thursday of practice, September 6th, D & J Sports will be coming to practice.  Call 281-370-7946 if there’s something you want them to bring.  ALL SWIMMERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO HAVE THEIR OWN FINS THIS YEAR.  The fins we used to borrow from FAST are now at another pool.  Every group will need fins and kickboard.  Green, add pull buoy, Junior add buoy, paddles and drag suit.  On the D & J order form, the drag suit was accidentally left off, so ask Becky about that when you order.  Note:  it’s not necessary to have all gear before practices begin.  Wait until D & J Sports comes out to get the best prices and the most convenience.

Looking ahead, here is a link to all of the scheduled meets for the year: http://www.gulfswimming.org/meet_information/0708sc.htm

When you get to that page, you can click on a page that will show you the groupings, so you know which meet our team will be going to for that particular weekend.

Our pre-season clinic finished up last week with many of our swimmers becoming Terrapins.  I want to thank Michelle Scott for all her help in teaching this clinic.  She was invaluable.  I couldn’t have done it without her.  She is so great with the younger swimmers and such a good role-model.  We had those little ones doing not only front flip turns, but also back stroke flip turns!  They all improved their stroke technique and they all had fun.  So, Michelle, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Well, this will be my last weekly update to the Texas Terrapins Swim Team.  I want all of you to know how special you all are to me.  I will always treasure my time as your coach.  Now, I will be your cheerleader!  If you see me at a meet, it will be because I want to see you, not because I have to be there (you won’t see me early in the morning, either!).  I won’t be coaching in my new position.  I will be teaching and getting swimmers ready for the swim team.

I have my computer sleep mode set up to display all my photos.  Many times I sit down to work and I just watch for a little while.  I’ve got so many pictures and so many memories of my turtles.  I hope that you will all keep in touch with me and let me know how your season is going.  I’m very excited about the future of the Texas Terrapins Swim Team.  You’ve got some great coaches this year and everyone will learn a lot and have fun while they are.

Thanks for all the memories!

Love you,

Barbara Harold

coachbarbara@igg.net

August 20th

Reminder:         Team registration is this week.  Wednesday at Lakeside Trails clubhouse from 5 – 7:30PM for returning Terrapins.  New swimmers will sign up on Tuesday.  If you aren’t able to make Wednesday, feel free to come on Tuesday or bring your registration to practice this week (or next if you’re out of town this week).  Returning Terrapins will pay the team registration and September dues.  The USA registration will be due in November.  We had a few swimmers that signed up for the seasonal USA registration.  If your swimmer did, the USA registration will be due at sign up also.  Coaches will be on hand to help you pick the correct group for your swimmer.

New group added:          We’ve added a new group to fill in a gap.  TheAqua group is up to 4 days per week for 1 ½ hours.  They will swim from 4 – 5:30 or at the same time as Green as needed.  This will be a better step for those that are ready for Junior, but still young (9 or 10).

There are some other changes, so be sure to look over the registration form well.  The team registration fee is lower for multiple swimmers, the groups have been somewhat combined, so each group stands alone.  Blue, Teal and Green will swim up to 3 days per week.  Aqua is up to 4 days per week and Junior is up to 5 days per week.  Those that need to swim less because of other activities are welcome to do so.

We instituted a monthly cap, so if your family has multiple swimmers, you won’t pay more than $200 per month.  We’ve also increased the discount for additional swimmers, so if you have more than one swimmer, the 2nd one is $10 off (used to be $5).  We have also added an option to pay for the entire summer at a greatly reduced rate (if paid by June 1st).

Best of all, here are your new coaches:

Head Coach:                 Jason Harold

Assistant Coach:           Ethan Still

Assistant Coach:           Meagan Scott

This season is going to be a lot of fun.  I’m excited for the Terrapins to have such a strong coaching staff.  I’m leaving you all in great hands.

Thursday, August 30th will be my last day to be on deck as a Terrapin.  Please plan to make it to practice that day, so I can take a bunch of pictures and get a bunch of hugs!

July 26th

I hope all the swimmers are enjoying their “dry” time and relaxing.  We returned from the TAGS meet Sunday night.  Courtney and Kayla performed very well and had a great time competing against the best in the state.  Kayla earned 4 AAA times at this meet.  We are so proud of our TAGS swimmers!

Here are some updates to the calendar:
August 6th, practices begin again - MORNINGS ONLY !!!

Junior    7:30 – 9:30 AM Monday through Thursday
Green   8:00 – 9:30 AM Monday through Thursday
Teal      7:30 – 8:30 OR 8:30 – 9:30 for clinic Monday through Thursday
Blue      7:45 – 8:30 OR 8:30 – 9:30 for clinic Monday through Thursday

Note:  Current Terrapins at the Blue or Teal level can participate in the clinic.  No need to sign up separately, just pay normal monthly dues.  To determine if your swimmer will benefit from the clinic, find out if all their strokes are legal.

New members will pay $50 for clinic.  Those at Teal or Blue level will go 3 weeks either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday from 8:30 – 9:30 AM.  Those at Green or higher level will come from 8 – 9:30 any 3 days (Monday through Thursday) for those same 3 weeks.  Anyone new that takes the clinic and signs up for the swim team IN AUGUST will get that $50 deducted from their registration fees.

August 21st is new member sign ups – 5 – 7:30 PM at Lakeside Trails clubhouse

August 22nd is returning Terrapins sign ups – 5 – 7:30 PM at Lakeside Trails clubhouse

August 25th – Triathlon - CANCELLED

August 27th        School starts, so practices move to 4 – 6PM.

I’ve attached some articles about nutrition for you to print out and have your swimmer read.  We have a variety of bodies on our team, but overall, I can say that every swimmer could eat a little better.  Eating foods that are more nutrition-packed is essential for swimmers.  Swimmer burn a lot of calories and some swimmers don’t keep up with that.  When a body isn’t able to feed its need for fuel, it will take it from the muscles.  Growing bodies require a lot of calories just for that.  Pile on the laps and laps of swimming, and you can see that swimmers really do need more calories in their diet than other sports might (this is of course meant for the higher levels of swimming where more time is spent in the water).

Most of our swimmers I don’t worry about.  They eat very healthy and have great appetites.  It’s the ones that don’t like to eat much that I worry about.  For those swimmers, having a meal replacement drink at the end of a real meal can help to add in the calories they may miss during the day when they are too busy, or distracted to eat.  If that isn’t an option, be sure to get them some vitamin supplements of some sort.  It’s always best to get it through food, but if they aren’t eating enough, they need to get it somewhere.

A child’s body will go through many changes on their way up.  They usually grow out first, get a little padded, and then grow up.  Try not to let your child worry about these changes to their bodies.  So much is in the media these days about how a body should look that I think it’s really important for kids to hear the words from their parents that they are normal and look great during the periods of padding before growth.  Emphasis on diet should be that we are giving our bodies enough of the proper nutrition to function at the level we wish it to and it should never have to do with how we look.

Texas Terrapins Swim Team August Clinic

The Texas Terrapins Swim Team will host their annual pre-season clinic August 6 – 23rd.  The pre-season clinic is to help swimmers who are still learning the basics of all four strokes.  Swimmers will have an option of going either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday.  The time of the clinic is from 8:30 – 9:30 AM – if this hour fills up, we will add another clinic from 7:30 – 8:30 AM.  The cost is $50 for the entire clinic.  For our new member special, anyone that takes the clinic AND signs up for our swim team for the 2007 – 08 season in August will get that $50 deducted from their registration fees.

For swimmers that know the four strokes and have done swim team before, the August clinic will be swam with our Green group practices, Monday through Thursday from 8AM – 9:30 AM (2 or 3 days per week).

Clinic attendees should bring the medical and release forms to the first day along with a $50 check made out to TTST.  These forms can be found on our website with the registration documents.

Swim team registration for the 2007 – 08 season will be held at the Lakeside Trails Clubhouse, 16125 Country Fair Lane in Fairfield, Tuesday, August 21st from 5:00 – 7:30 PM.  For more information, go to our website, www.texasterrapins.com or email Coach Jason at coachjason@igg.net or call Coach Barbara @ 713-725-6190.

July 2nd

Check the Meet Entries for the Champs meets July 14th and 15th.  Note that there are two separate meets.  The MAC meet is for the B & Under Champs and the FCST is the BB & up Champs.

Also the July calendar is publiahed.

We have the Gulf Champs meet this weekend, starting Thursday, so therefore we won’t have afternoon practice on that day.

June 25

We had a TAGS-ful weekend!  Kayla Rhodes performed amazingly this weekend and brought home 5 more TAGS times!!!  The meet went pretty fast, so she had to be ready for her events quickly.  On Saturday, she swam a TAGS time in the 200 free, then just a few heats later, she swam a TAGS time in the 400 free – her first time to swim it long course!!

Courtney Connelly got her LC 100 breast TAGS and made Gulf Champs and AA on several others.  She’s very close on a few things, so we are looking forward to an action-packed Gulf Champs meet the first weekend in July.

Shelby Weyand had all best time swims and stellar performances.  She dropped almost a minute on her 100 fly and a minute on her 200 free.  She got ribbons in several events.  Jason and I are so proud of these girls.  They really swam great this weekend.

Gulf Champs entries are due today, last call.  If your swimmer qualified, you have already been notified.

The next meet we have is one that all swimmers with USA times can do. Summer league is officially over on Tuesday, so consider entering your swimmer in the B & Under Champs in Magnolia.  Here is a link to the meet invitation:      http://www.gulfswimming.org/meet_information/lc07/mac/m1/invitation.pdf

ENTRIES FOR THIS MEET ARE DUE THIS THURSDAY.  I will send out my wishful entries list either today or tomorrow, so you can just let me know if you will be able to attend this meet.

Those with BB times or that are 13 & older, will go to the Summer Champs meet at First Colony.  Here is a link to that meet:    http://www.gulfswimming.org/meet_information/lc07/fcst/m1/invitation.pdf

ENTRIES ARE ALSO DUE THIS THURSDAY.

NOTE:              If your swimmer has been inactive, but plans to swim in July and wishes to attend the swim meet, you must notify me immediately so I can re-activate them and get them entered.

We are probably not going to be able to have any more Monday afternoon practices.  They are backed up with make ups due to the bad weather, so even if we have a good week, they will have past make ups to take care of.   We only have 4 more Mondays of afternoon practices (after TAGS, we end afternoon practices until school starts) and I’m looking into other possibilities for those weeks.  I will let you know if anything works out.

June 18

Today’s afternoon practice is canceled due to FAC’s swim lesson make ups.

We haven’t been very lucky with our afternoon practices, so for those that have the option, please come to the morning practices.  In the afternoon heat, storms are more likely if we don’t get canceled or delayed for some other reason.

For those in the Junior group that really need those two a day practices, I would like for you to try some “mental swimming”.  This can be done with or without water.  If you have a pool, you would get in and do drills and work on technique.  You can get a tether to swim without turning to get in some distance.  You can also do turn work in a small pool.  Those without a pool can use some quiet time to imagine swimming and how you place your hand in the water, etc.  Be very specific and detailed in your mental swimming.  Studies have shown that it truly makes a difference, so use this easy tool!

I hope all our Dads had a great day yesterday.  A belated Happy Father’s Day goes out to all of you!

The meet information for this weekend’s meet should be posted by Wednesday.  I will get all of the information out to you as soon as I get it.

Those that have qualified for Gulf Champs have already been notified.  Those entries are due this Thursday, but if we need to make changes after the meet this weekend, we will have time before it’s sent off to the other team.

We won’t have a meet the weekend of NWAL invitationals, so I plan to go and visit those meets.

The first week of July has the 4th on Wednesday, so we will skip practice that day and make it up on Friday.  For July, we have 3 full weeks of practice, then we’ll take off the last week of July and the first week of August.  We’ll be back at practice August 6th.

Registration for the 2007-08 season will be Tuesday, August 21st for returning Terrapins, and Wednesday, August 22nd for new members.  We will have our pre-season clinic during the month of August for those that are still working on learning the 4 strokes.

Attached are the preliminary entries for the Woodlands Open meet June 22 – 24th.  If you meant to sign up for this meet and forgot, this is your last chance.  You must email or call me today to let me know that you wish to enter this meet.

We are at the time of season for both summer league swimmers and long course swimmers that all are trying to make those times or goals that they had set at the beginning of the season.  So, how do we help our swimmers attain their goals?

Remind them that at practice, they should be focused and working on finishing sets with the best stroke technique possible, especially when they are tired.
